Plains Camp
Walking Safaris
Kruger National Park, South Africa

Plains Camp is situated in a remote area of a private concession, within the world renowned Kruger National Park. The concession is noted as an excellent game viewing area, where good sightings and Big Five encounters can be expected. The Rhino Walking Safaris which operate from this base are a unique and very special way to experience the African Bushveld.  Plains Camp operates on scheduled departure days – Tuesday, Friday and Sundays and a minimum 2 night stay. Guests are invited to enjoy a night or two before/after their trail at Rhino Safari Lodge.

Guests access the camp via Rhino Post Safari Lodge which can be reached by normal 2 x 4 vehicles. The drive from Johannesburg is approximately 6 hours and guests need to be at Rhino Camp Lodge by 14h00 for the inter-lodge transfer in an open game drive vehicle, which is an additional half hour drive. The closest airport is Kruger Mpumalanga Airport in Nelspruit – approximately, one hour flying time from Johannesburg and a two and a half hour drive (either by chauffeur transfer or in a rental vehicle). Charter flights can also be arranged to the airstrip at Skukuza.

Plains Camp has four luxury explorer-style tents each with an en-suite bathroom and hot running water. In keeping with the ethics of Rhino Walking Safari’s ‘tread lightly on the land’, no trees were cut down and no concrete was used in the building of this camp. All the building structures are wood and canvas.

The camp is nestled amongst Acacia thorn trees and overlooks the Timbitene plain and waterhole which is often host to zebra, giraffe, buffalo, elephant, rhino and lion. The camp has a generator and a back up battery system, so guests can enjoy 24 hour lighting and overhead fans.

There are a variety of different trail options which guests can choose from - which include accommodation at one camp, two camps and/or the third ‘sleepout’ option. Walking Trails are booked for a minimum of two nights and each of the overnight options includes a different accommodation and activity experience. (Rhino Post Safari Lodge – game drives, Plains Camp – primarily walking)

Walking Safaris are limited to 8 guests and are guided by two armed rangers. Walks start early morning, after coffee and traditional home made rusks. The walking safaris are designed around the interest and fitness of the group, but will involve following rhino tracks and elephant paths as well as enjoying all the other sounds and smells of the bush. Guides will share their wealth of bush culture and knowledge of their natural surroundings – identification of animals, trees, grasses, insects, birds and the medicinal uses of plants, local folklore and basic tracking skills. The warmer hours of the day can be spent relaxing in the shade of the acacia trees while watching the waterhole. An afternoon walk or game drive can be enjoyed again in the cooler hours of the day just before sunset. An average walk is between three and four hours.

For something completely different Plains Camp offers a totally unrivalled wilderness experience and is the only place within the Kruger National Park offering this unusual accommodation. Guests can walk from Plains Camp to the ‘Sleepouts’ which are 4m high elevated platforms with tents on the top allowing visitors to literally sleep out under the stars!
Plains Camp offers guests the unique opportunity of enjoying all the comforts of home, while experiencing real African Wilderness on their doorstep.
