Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve
Limpopo, South Africa

The Sabi Sand Game Reserve is the oldest and most successful private reserve in South Africa and was a forerunner in sustainable wildlife tourism in Southern Africa. Formed in 1934 - it has only ever been a wilderness area and is home to a vast and diverse animal population, including Africa’s ‘Big 5’ – lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard as well as a number of other endangered species, including wild dog, bats, honey badgers and ox peckers.

Bordering the Kruger National Park, Sabi Sand is part of a conservation area that covers over two million hectares. There are no boundary fences between the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Kruger National Park allowing animals to pass unhindered between the reserves. The area benefits from a rich diversity of animal, bird and plant life while at the same time offering the privacy and exclusivity of a private game reserve.

The area is in the process of being further enlarged with the Peace Park or Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park concept which will hopefully see the integration and amalgamation of protected areas in the countries of Mozamabique and eventually Zimbabwe.

Two rivers supply the game reserve – the Sand River which flows through the reserve for 50km from north-west to south-east and the Sabie River which flows on the southern boundary. The sustenance of these rivers ensures that the area enjoys one of the highest and most bio-diverse wildlife populations of any area in Africa. The area is home to over 330 different tree species, over 45 different fish species, more than 30 amphibian species, over 100 reptile species, in excess of 500 bird species and over 145 different mammals.

The Sabi Sand Reserve is an association of freehold landowners, many of whom manage active safari operations, all sharing a common environmental management programme administered by a warden reporting to an elected executive committee. The Sabi Sand Reserve boasts a selection of top class lodges which pride themselves in luxury accommodation, breathtaking landscapes, fine cuisine, skilled and experienced guides and rangers and unrivalled hospitality. Each lodge has something unique to offer visitors.

The Sabi Sand Reserve shares a 50km (31 mile) unfenced border with the Kruger National Park and this immense tract of land is home to a number of luxury lodges who are actively involved in environmental management programs and studies including: Alien plant control, micro catchment management to combat erosion, monitoring of wildlife and habitat densities, anti poaching units and control of runaway fires.  The main objective of the Sabi Sand game management policy is to monitor the habitat and wildlife densities. The reserve has had to cope with a number of threats such as bovine TB, foot and mouth disease, overgrazing, bush encroachment and uncontrolled fires. The re-introduction of certain species such as rhino, sable tssessebee, nyala and wildebeest has supported this objective to some degree whilst the ever increasing elephant population remains a challenge. The protection of the Sand River (the lifeblood of the Sabi Sand Reserve) is promoted and the hunting of wildlife is forbidden.  In an attempt to prevent the reserve from becoming a series of small holdings - lodges within the Sabi Sand may no longer be divided into portions of less than 857 hectares.

The lodges are also proudly involved in community empowerment projects which include amongst others, activities which help them to generate income, provision of health care and provision of drinking water.

Game viewing safaris generally leave the lodges twice a day – in the early morning as the sun rises and the bush awakens and again in the late afternoon, into early evening as the animals become more active again after resting in the mid day sun. This evening drive offers great opportunities for sighting some of the reserve’s nocturnal animals. The open safari vehicles seat between 6 and 12 passengers and are led by experienced and knowledgeable rangers and trackers, who are also experienced in looking for unparalleled photographic opportunities.

Visitors to the Sabi Sand can travel to the area by self driving from Johannesburg, arranging a private road transfer, by private air charter to any of the lodges’ private landing strips or on one of the daily scheduled flights directly into Kruger Mpumulanga International Airport in Nelspruit or Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit.

The Sabi Sand forms part of the greater Kruger National Park and is actively involved in environmental management programmes and community empowerment projects. This private reserve offers visitors a selection of top class lodges.
