Set in an indigenous garden of tall trees and cool, green lawns - watered only with recycled water - the Lodge’s main bar and entertainment area is thatched and these are the focal areas where guests generally gather. The open lounge is a great place to relax and wildlife is often seen wandering in front of the lodge. The swimming pool is ideally positioned for both game viewing and bird watching, whilst guests cool off or enjoy a refreshing drink. Families of nyala and warthog are often seen in the main lodge grounds. The lodge also has a gym with equipment including free weights and an electronic treadmill. There is an underground hide accessed from the lodge by a swing bridge. The hide offers a peaceful place to watch the wildlife coming to drink at Shadulu Dam.

Idube Lodge has 9 comfortable en-suite chalets, which were originally designed and built to blend into the bush. The chalets are made of rough, naturally coloured bricks, while the tiled roofs create a clean, cool interior. The bathrooms at Idube have recently had a complete makeover and all have double vanity basins, bath, shower, outdoor shower and toilet and all are finished in attractive, natural colours and textures. The geysers are powered by gas to reduce the use of electricity. Each chalet has been individually decorated, with attractively draped mosquito netting, adding a touch of safari romance. The windows also have mosquito gauze for added comfort and each chalet additionally boasts a private deck from where guests can watch squirrels, monkeys, birds or any number of the many other creatures that have made Idube their home, feeding or wandering among the chalets.

Idube Lodge also has 2 suites – the Makubela Suites - these are spacious and have their own entrance hall, outside deck, bedroom, lounge area and large bathroom with bath, shower and separate outside shower. The two suites can be made inter-leading. The suites are situated down a wooden walkway and offer complete privacy with no other buildings and surrounded only by natural bush. The suites all offer air-conditioning, overhead fans, minibars, tea & coffee making facilities, hairdryers, safety deposit boxes, mosquito netting and window screens. Each room opens up with a sliding/folding door on two sides to a large wooden patio, into which is set a private splash pool with a superb view onto the bush beyond. As part of the Makubela package, a romantic lantern lit dinner can be served on the private deck – adding another unforgettable memory.

Breakfasts and lunches are usually enjoyed on the open air dining deck, while dinners are enjoyed in the boma or out at a bush venue, under the stars. Traditional braai’s (or barbeque) are often arranged as are traditional drumming and singing. Meals generally combine traditional African flavours with modern gourmet trends and Game meat is often on the menu.

Idube offers a wealth of game viewing opportunities and Game Drives are enjoyed twice daily - in the early morning and again in the late afternoon/evening with the lodge boasting access to an area of 10 000 hectares, which is home to Africa’s ‘Big 5’ – lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant as well as a variety of other game species and over 300 species of birds. Game drives are usually 3 to 4 hours long with excellent, close up wildlife sightings as well as frequent leopard sightings. Guided bush walks can be enjoyed after breakfast and Spa Treatments can be arranged in the comfort of one’s own room or suite. Tours to a neighbouring community and local village have been put together and include visiting a local school and pre-school, singing and dancing and tasting traditional food. Balloon Safaris and Elephant educational excursions can easily be arranged.

Idube Safari Lodge is environmentally conscious and a number of initiatives including the use of gas instead of electricity and the recycling of water all contribute to reducing the environmental impact of the lodge on its surroundings.

Situated in one of South Africa’s most prestigious game reserves – Idube Lodge offers excellent game viewing opportunities and a peaceful retreat into real African bush.
