Recently upgraded, in 2010, Pioneer Camp offers a combination of style, bushveld architecture and nature. The Camp only has three luxury suites - each can sleep 2 adults and 2 children, offering exclusive accommodation for a maximum of 6 adults and 6 children. Each suite is family friendly and has an extra room and bathroom for children.

Pioneer Camp is the most secluded of Londolozi’s Luxury camps and is also perhaps the most exciting and adaptable of the Londolozi camps.  Each of the three private suites, have superb river views and are ideally designed for honeymoons and private getaways. In addition, the camp can be easily converted into a private bush home for family groups of 6 – 14 people. Two of the family units are interconnected through linking glass sky walkways.

The spacious entrance halls are decorated with a Ralph Lauren feel - clean lines, modern and sophisticated, while the floor to ceiling glass sliding panels frame the wilderness views. The bathrooms are classic Victorian with modern marble, chrome and mahogany finishes.

Throughout the camp there is a sense of history thanks to faithfully restored memorabilia – old suitcases, photographs, silver, crystal glass and gramophones. It was here that the Varty and Taylor ancestors arrived, over eighty years ago and pitched their tents. That wild untamed wilderness is still the defining experience for visitors to Pioneer Camp.

The camp can either be booked as a children’s camp for multi-generational family travel, for children 4 years and older, or as an adult camp with no children under 16 years (should the first suite be sold to an adult couple, the camp will have no children under 16 years).
The children’s programme at Pioneer Camp is uniquely tailored for each child, this is based on personal interaction that is energetic and flexible, allowing children to learn something about both nature and themselves.

Pioneer Camp at Londolozi, offers visitors a true wildlife experience, with ‘Big 5’ game viewing, game drives, and game walks as well as spectacular bird watching, with over 450 different bird species, recorded. Game drives are conducted twice daily with experienced and knowledgeable rangers in 4 x 4 vehicles providing guests with opportunities of getting up close to and learning about some of Africa’s wild animals. The Bush walks are also a perfect pastime, especially during the cooler winter months allowing guests to escape the noise and distractions and feel at one with nature. Bush Breakfasts and Adventure Picnics can be enjoyed out in the African wilderness – imagine savouring gourmet salmon and scrambled eggs with your feet in the sand, on the banks of a river enjoying the fresh air and African wilderness. The ancient art of tracking has been uniquely preserved at Londolozi and going in search of the big cats as well as rhino and buffalos… on foot, is an experience which will leaves guests with an indelible memory. For those looking for a little more adventure or a deeper reconnection to nature, a Sleep Out, cradled in the branches of a 1000 year old Ebony tree, allows visitors to sleep out under a clear, starlit winter sky and enjoy natures nocturnal sounds. The rangers at Londolozi are all trained in Astronomy and evenings can be spent under starlit skies learning about the African sky and stars or sitting around the campfire listening to stories of Londolozi’s history, myths and legends or mysteries of adventure and safari, steeped in tradition.

Yoga classes are conducted daily at Varty Camp or alternatively private yoga sessions can be arranged in the privacy of one’s suite or the shade on the deck. Massage therapies on offer include Swedish and Thai massage, Aromatherapy and Reiki healing. All therapies are available in either the lodges massage room, in the privacy of your suite or out in the wilderness.

There is golf nearby, historical tours can be arranged or the ‘In the Footsteps of Nelson Mandela’ walking tour can be enjoyed offering visitors the opportunity to interact with many of the staff and their families who have lived and worked at Londolozi for over 30 years as well as view the Freedom’s Way Art installation which has been completed to draw attention to the values which Nelson Mandela put forward to the South African nation.

Everything about Pioneer Camp is deeply personal and provides a romantic backdrop of breathtaking beauty. The camp is unique, peaceful and remote.
